Semrush AI Toolkit vs Ahrefs Brand Radar: the SEO suites do AI

Updated July 17, 2026

Semrush's AI Visibility Toolkit and Ahrefs Brand Radar measure AI answers in fundamentally different ways. Semrush tracks custom prompts you define across six surfaces at $99 per month per domain with no free trial; Ahrefs derives AI share of voice from real People Also Ask questions and splits mentions from citations, as an add-on requiring a Lite plan or higher. The practical answer: use whichever suite you already pay for, because neither justifies switching suites on its own. And neither closes the gap that matters most: both chart the AI answers you lose without producing the page that changes them, which is the loop Reachroller adds alongside either suite from $29 per month.

Why the suites moved, and why it was inevitable

For two decades Semrush and Ahrefs sold the same fundamental promise: we will show you where you stand in search. Then search moved. McKinsey found in October 2025 that 50 percent of consumers already use AI-powered search intentionally as a primary way to find information and make buying decisions, and G2's 2026 research found 51 percent of B2B software buyers now start research with an AI chatbot more often than with Google. A rank tracker that cannot see inside ChatGPT answers is measuring a shrinking share of the buying journey, and both companies knew it. Semrush shipped the AI Visibility Toolkit; Ahrefs shipped Brand Radar.

What makes this comparison interesting is that the two giants read the same problem and built different instruments. Semrush built a prompt tracker: you define the questions, it watches the answers. Ahrefs built a share-of-voice index derived from question data it already owned. Those are genuinely different methodologies with different failure modes, and the differences matter more than the feature checklists suggest. This guide takes each in turn, then compares them head to head, then covers the gap that neither closes and what to do about it. For the wider field beyond the suites, see the full AI visibility tools comparison.

Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit: the prompt tracker

The Semrush toolkit tracks six surfaces: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overviews, AI Mode and Copilot. You define the prompts that matter for your brand, the toolkit runs them and reports which answers mention you, your visibility against named competitors, and how the picture moves over time, all inside the Semrush interface your team may already live in. That last clause is the real pitch. For a Semrush shop, AI answers appear next to rank tracking, site audits and keyword research on one login and one invoice, and workflow gravity is a legitimate reason to buy.

The costs need stating precisely. The toolkit runs $99 per month per domain standalone, or comes inside Semrush One from $199 per month. Extra prompt packs cost $60 per month for 50 prompts, and there is no free trial, which is increasingly unusual in a category where the strongest budget tools let you test on your own brand before paying. The per-domain unit is the sharpest edge: a consultant or agency tracking five brands pays $495 per month before prompt packs, where flat multi-workspace plans elsewhere cover ten brands for half that. Per-domain pricing is a rounding error for a single-brand team and a compounding tax on a roster.

Methodologically, custom prompts cut both ways. Defining your own questions means you track exactly the buying scenarios you care about, including long-tail comparisons no question database contains. It also means the quality of your visibility data is capped by the quality of your prompt list, and a team that writes ten branded softball prompts will get a flattering number that predicts nothing. If you go this route, write prompts a stranger would type, and keep branded prompts out of the headline set.

Ahrefs Brand Radar: the share-of-voice index

Brand Radar approaches the same problem from the data Ahrefs already had. It benchmarks AI share of voice across Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot, and its method is distinctive: rather than asking you to invent prompts, it pulls real People Also Ask questions from the Ahrefs keyword index and runs those through each assistant. Your share of voice is grounded in questions people demonstrably ask, which removes the garbage-in problem of a badly written prompt list and makes competitor benchmarks more comparable, since every brand is measured against the same question universe.

Its second distinctive feature is the split between mentions, where your brand is named in the answer text, and citations, where your site is linked as a source. These are different currencies: mentions shape buyer shortlists even with no click, citations carry traffic and compound authority, and most tools blur them into one score. The distinction matters enough that we wrote a full piece on it, mentions vs citations: the two currencies of AI visibility, and Brand Radar deserves credit for building it into the product.

The limits mirror the strengths. Brand Radar is not sold standalone: it rides an Ahrefs subscription, and custom prompt tracking requires a Lite plan or higher, so the real price of Brand Radar is the price of being an Ahrefs customer. And the People Also Ask universe, while honest, is Google-shaped: buying questions people type into chatbots but never into Google, the long conversational comparisons that dominate B2B evaluation, sit outside it unless you add custom prompts and re-create the Semrush approach on top.

Both companies' research is worth reading either way

An underrated fact in this matchup: whichever tool you pick, both companies publish some of the best primary research in the category, and the research is free. Semrush's three-month study of the most-cited domains in AI answers confirmed the Wikipedia and Reddit dominance that other analyses found, and its 2026 conversion analysis measured AI-driven visitors converting at roughly 4.4 times standard organic traffic, one of the key numbers in the business case for this whole discipline. If you cite one conversion figure to a budget holder, the honest range across studies runs from 1.2x to that 4.4x, a spread we unpack in what the AI conversion studies really say.

Ahrefs' research earns the same respect, including for publishing against interest. Its May 2026 study of 1,885 pages found that adding JSON-LD schema produced no measurable citation lift on already-cited pages for ChatGPT and AI Mode, and a statistically significant decline for AI Overviews citations, a finding that complicates a tactic half the industry sells. The caveat is real, the pages studied were already heavily cited, and the honesty is the point. An Ahrefs conversion figure of up to 23 times organic also circulates widely; it is generally considered an outlier and should be cited with that caveat. Our full reading of the schema evidence is in schema markup for AI search.

The gap neither suite closes

Both toolkits end at the same wall: the report. Suppose Brand Radar shows your share of voice trailing two competitors, or the Semrush toolkit shows you missing from 18 of 25 tracked prompts. The next step is the same either way: someone must write a page that answers the lost question citably, publish it, push it into the indexes, and verify weeks later whether the answer changed. Neither Semrush nor Ahrefs produces any of that. For suite vendors this is a rational scope decision. For the buyer it means the $99 per month buys the diagnosis and leaves the treatment unstaffed.

This is the slot Reachroller is built for, alongside a suite rather than instead of one. It tracks your buying questions across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Grok through official APIs, ChatGPT live today and the rest rolling out, and for every question you lose it generates a publish-ready fix page: URL slug, title tag, meta description, schema markup and indexing steps, with a recheck that shows whether the answer flipped. Scoring is auditable in a way client-facing teams appreciate: every number links to the raw stored answer, and branded questions are excluded from the headline score. At $29 per month for Starter, it costs less than a third of the Semrush toolkit's per-domain price, and the two do different jobs.

One more caveat that applies to every tool in this post, suites included. AI answers are probabilistic: SparkToro measured under a 1 percent chance that two identical ChatGPT runs return the same brand list. Whatever dashboard you read, trust trend lines over single runs, and prefer tools that store the raw answers behind their numbers so you can check what the score is made of.

The verdict, by situation

You already pay for Semrush or Ahrefs. Turn on the AI add-on you already half-own: the toolkit if you are a Semrush shop, Brand Radar if you are an Ahrefs shop. Switching suites for the AI add-on alone is not worth the migration cost in either direction; the add-ons are closer in value than the suites are in workflow. Then close the execution gap with Reachroller at $29 per month, which pairs cleanly with either: the suite watches classic search and share of voice, Reachroller tracks the specific buying questions and ships the fixes. The division of labor is described on how it works.

You pay for neither suite. Then do not start with one for AI visibility's sake. Buying a $99 to $199 per month SEO suite to obtain its AI reporting add-on inverts the value: you would pay suite prices for the add-on and own a suite you did not need. Start with a dedicated tool at a dedicated price, and add a suite when classic rank tracking genuinely enters your workflow. Reachroller's trial, three days, 50 credits, every feature and no card, produces a full first report and a generated fix, which is a better first week than either suite offers, since Semrush's toolkit has no trial at all.

You run an agency roster. The per-domain math disqualifies the Semrush toolkit early: ten clients cost $990 per month before prompt packs. Ahrefs Brand Radar rides your existing subscription more gracefully but stays reporting-only. The dedicated agency plans are built for this shape, compared in full in AI visibility tools for agencies, where Reachroller Agency covers ten white-label workspaces at $249 per month.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Semrush's AI Toolkit and Ahrefs Brand Radar?+

The question source. Semrush's AI Visibility Toolkit runs custom prompts you define across six surfaces and reports visibility per domain at $99 per month per domain. Ahrefs Brand Radar starts from real People Also Ask questions in the Ahrefs keyword index, runs them through the assistants, and reports AI share of voice with a split between mentions and citations.

How much does Semrush AI visibility tracking cost?+

$99 per month per domain standalone, or bundled inside Semrush One from $199 per month, with extra prompt packs at $60 per month for 50 prompts. There is no free trial. The per-domain unit matters: tracking five brands costs $495 per month before prompt packs.

How much does Ahrefs Brand Radar cost?+

Ahrefs does not sell Brand Radar standalone. It rides an Ahrefs subscription, and custom prompt tracking requires a Lite plan or higher. For existing Ahrefs customers that makes it the cheapest way to see AI share of voice; for everyone else it means buying an SEO suite to get an AI report.

Is Semrush or Ahrefs better for AI visibility?+

Use the one you already subscribe to: neither add-on justifies switching suites. Semrush suits teams that want to define exact buying prompts per domain; Ahrefs suits teams that want share of voice grounded in real question data with the mentions versus citations split. Both stop at reporting.

Do Semrush or Ahrefs fix low AI visibility?+

No. Both are measurement products: they show which answers mention or cite you and leave the content work to your team. Changing an answer requires publishing a citable page, getting it indexed and rechecking. That execution loop is what Reachroller adds, generating a publish-ready fix page per lost question from $29 per month.

Should I replace my SEO suite with an AI visibility tool?+

No. Google's AI features cite from Google's organic index, so being indexed and rankable remains a precondition for AI visibility, and the suites measure that plumbing better than anyone. The setup that works is complementary: your existing suite for classic search, plus a dedicated tool like Reachroller for tracking and fixing the AI answers themselves.
