Google AI Overviews
Definition
Google AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries that appear above the traditional results on Google Search, composed by Gemini models from retrieved web pages and displayed with a panel of source links. Rolled out broadly from May 2024, they appeared on roughly 48 percent of tracked queries by March 2026 and substantially reduce clicks to the organic results below them.
How AI Overviews are generated
An AI Overview is a retrieval-augmented answer. When Google decides a query would benefit from a summary, a Gemini model receives passages drawn from Google's index, synthesizes a short answer, and attaches links to the pages that supported it. The sources shown in the panel are the grounding evidence, so appearing there is a function of being retrieved and quoted, which overlaps with classic ranking but is a distinct outcome.
Coverage has expanded fast. Ahrefs tracking put AI Overviews on 34.5 percent of queries in December 2025 and 48 percent by March 2026. Informational and question-shaped queries trigger them most often, while navigational searches mostly do not, which means content built to answer buyer questions is exactly the content competing for overview placement.
The relationship between ranking and citation has been loosening. An ALM Corp analysis found the share of AI Overview citations drawn from top-10 organic results fell from 76 percent in July 2025 to 38 percent by March 2026. Google increasingly cites pages that answer the specific sub-question well rather than the pages that rank highest for the head term, so a page can win a citation without winning the ranking, and a number one result can be skipped entirely.
What AI Overviews do to clicks and brand discovery
The click impact is the reason brands care. Pew Research Center analyzed 68,879 real searches from 900 U.S. adults and found users clicked a traditional result on 15 percent of searches without an AI summary, and 8 percent when one appeared. Ahrefs measured the same effect from the ranking side across 300,000 keywords: the top-ranked page loses about 34.5 percent of its clicks when an AI Overview sits above it.
That traffic does not vanish evenly. Being cited inside the overview changes the economics, because the small set of linked sources inherits the attention the ten blue links used to share. For a brand, the overview is effectively a shortlist of two to six sources where the page used to be one option among ten or more. Absence from the box on a high-intent query now means competing for a shrinking pool of residual clicks.
The commercial consequence is that brand discovery is compressing into fewer, higher-stakes placements. When an overview names products or vendors directly, buyers can form a consideration set without visiting anyone's site. That makes the text of the overview itself, which brands it names and how it describes them, a marketing surface worth monitoring in its own right, separate from the citation links.
Measuring and improving your AI Overview presence
Google gives partial first-party data. In June 2026, Search Console added generative AI performance reporting, announced on the Google Search Central Blog, which shows impressions and clicks from Google's AI search experiences. It confirms whether AI surfaces send you traffic, but it does not show which queries triggered overviews that excluded you, or what the overview text said about your brand, so third-party prompt tracking is still required for competitive visibility.
A workable measurement loop tracks a fixed set of category queries, records whether an overview appeared, whether your domain was cited, whether your brand was named in the text, and how that compares to competitors over time. Overviews are volatile, appearing and disappearing on the same query across days, so trends across repeated checks matter more than any single observation. The same panel of queries doubles as a hallucination watch, since an overview that names your brand can also describe it wrongly, and the description deserves as much scrutiny as the placement.
Improving placement follows the citation evidence. Pages that answer one question directly, lead with the conclusion, and carry specific numbers with named sources are the pattern that retrieval-based systems quote. Since citations increasingly come from beyond the top 10, publishing precise answers to the sub-questions inside your category can earn overview placement that your rankings alone would never predict.
One popular tactic deserves a caveat. Structured data is frequently sold as an AI Overview shortcut, and the evidence is mixed: SE Ranking found around 71 percent of pages cited by ChatGPT carry schema markup, while an Ahrefs study of 1,885 pages found no measurable citation lift from adding schema to pages that were already being cited. Schema helps machines parse your pages and is worth implementing for that reason, but the reliable driver of overview citations is passage-level answer quality, a clear claim with evidence that the model can lift into its summary.
Frequently asked questions
How often do AI Overviews appear on Google?+
Ahrefs tracking measured AI Overviews on 48 percent of queries in March 2026, up from 34.5 percent in December 2025. Panel estimates vary with the keyword mix, and other trackers have reported figures from 13 to 48 percent, but every major dataset shows the same direction: coverage keeps expanding, especially on informational queries.
Do AI Overviews reduce traffic to websites?+
Yes, for pages that are not cited. Pew found the click rate on traditional results drops from 15 percent to 8 percent when an AI summary appears, and Ahrefs measured a 34.5 percent click loss for top-ranked pages across 300,000 keywords. Pages cited inside the overview capture a disproportionate share of the clicks that remain.
Can I rank number one and still miss the AI Overview?+
Yes, and it is increasingly common. ALM Corp found the share of overview citations coming from top-10 organic results fell from 76 percent to 38 percent between July 2025 and March 2026. Google cites the passages that best answer the specific sub-questions, so a lower-ranked page with a cleaner direct answer can take the citation.
How is an AI Overview different from Google AI Mode?+
An AI Overview is a summary block added above the normal results on a standard search. AI Mode is a separate conversational tab that replaces the results page entirely, answering with follow-up support like a chatbot. Overviews reach the most users today; AI Mode is where Google is heading, with over a billion monthly users reported at I/O 2026.
