What is answer engine optimization (AEO)?

Updated July 24, 2026

Answer engine optimization, or AEO, is the practice of structuring your content so that answer engines, meaning AI assistants like ChatGPT and Perplexity along with answer features like Google's AI Overviews, select your brand or your page when they respond to a user's question. Where classic SEO competes for a position in a list of links, AEO competes to be the answer itself. The core moves are answering questions directly in the first paragraph, backing claims with citable statistics and sources, earning mentions on the third-party sites engines trust, and staying indexed. Tools like Reachroller close the loop by tracking which buying questions already name you and generating fix pages for the ones that do not.

What counts as an answer engine

An answer engine is any system that responds to a question with an answer rather than a list of places where an answer might live. The category predates the current AI wave: Google's featured snippets, knowledge panels and People Also Ask boxes were answer engines bolted onto a link engine, and the practitioners who optimized for them were doing AEO before the acronym existed. What changed is that the answer stopped being a quoted excerpt and became a composed response. ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Grok read multiple sources and write something new, and Google's AI Overviews do the same on top of the classic results page.

The composed answer changes the economics of the page. In a link engine, ten results share the click. In an answer engine, the response is singular: the brands named in it exist for that user and the rest do not, and often no click happens at all. Third-party tracking through early 2026 puts AI Overviews on roughly 48 percent of queries, though other panels measure 13 to 25 percent depending on the query mix, and McKinsey reported in October 2025 that half of consumers already use AI-powered search intentionally when making buying decisions. AEO is the discipline that grew up around this shift: the craft of being the answer instead of a candidate for the click.

Where AEO sits between SEO and GEO

You will hear three acronyms used for overlapping work, and the honest map is short. SEO optimizes for position in ranked results, and it remains the foundation because most answer engines retrieve their sources from search indexes. GEO, coined by a Princeton-led research paper published at KDD 2024, names the specific practice of increasing visibility inside generative AI responses. AEO sits across both: it inherited its content instincts from the featured-snippet era and its measurement problems from the generative one. In practice, teams doing serious AEO and teams doing serious GEO are doing the same work with different vocabulary, a point we argue in detail in our honest guide to the acronym soup.

What AEO is definitively not is SEO with new labels. The Princeton study makes this concrete: keyword stuffing, a tactic that once worked in link engines, performed near the bottom for generative engines, below doing nothing. The same study found that adding quotations, statistics and cited sources lifted a source's visibility in generated answers by up to roughly 40 percent. The overlap and the divergences with classic search are mapped fully in GEO vs SEO: what changes, what carries over.

The behavior data that makes AEO urgent

AEO would be an academic curiosity if buyers still started at Google. They increasingly do not. G2's research found that 51 percent of B2B software buyers now begin research with an AI chatbot more often than with Google, up from 36 percent only seven months earlier. Among the same population, 72 percent use ChatGPT during vendor evaluation, 44 percent also use Perplexity during shortlisting, and comparing vendor strengths and weaknesses is the single most common AI use case in software research at 41 percent.

Forrester's 2026 Buyers' Journey Survey of 18,000 buyers puts the ceiling on the trend: 94 percent used AI during their most recent purchase, 55 percent compared vendors inside AI tools, and 47 percent built internal business cases before ever contacting a vendor. The consequences land on specific brands. G2 found 69 percent of B2B software buyers chose a different vendor than they originally expected because of AI chatbot output, and 33 percent bought from a brand they had never heard of before the AI named it. Meanwhile 51 percent of B2B tech brands have zero citations across ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini. The full dataset is unpacked in our breakdown of the Forrester and G2 buyer research.

Read those numbers together and the stakes become plain. The answer engine is now where shortlists form, shortlists are being rewritten by engine output, and half the vendors in a typical category are absent from the conversation entirely. AEO is the work of making sure the absent vendor is a competitor.

The AEO toolkit, with the evidence attached

AEO advice suffers from confident repetition of untested claims. The table below lists the working toolkit as of July 2026, with what the published evidence actually supports.

TacticWhat the evidence saysEffort
Answer-first opening paragraphsEngines extract and quote direct answers; the Princeton GEO study validated fluent, authoritative phrasingLow, per page
Question-shaped headingsMatches how retrieval maps user questions to page sections; long observed in featured snippetsLow
Quotable statistics with named sourcesPrinceton GEO study, KDD 2024: statistics and citations among the top methods, up to ~40% visibility liftMedium
FAQPage and other schemaContested: SE Ranking found ~71% of ChatGPT-cited pages carry schema; Ahrefs found no lift on already-cited pagesLow
One page per buying questionAnswer engines retrieve at the question level; broad pages dilute the matchHigh
Presence on cited third parties5W Research: Wikipedia and Reddit exceed 25% of ChatGPT citations combinedHigh, compounding
Indexing in Google and BingAnswer engines retrieve from search indexes; a precondition, not a tacticLow

The answer-first paragraph deserves the most attention because it is the cheapest high-leverage change. An answer engine composing a response wants a passage that resolves the question completely in one place. A page that opens with three paragraphs of preamble before reaching the point gives the engine nothing to extract. A page whose first 100 words answer the question directly, with a concrete claim and a number, hands the engine its material. Write the answer first, then earn the reader's continued attention with the depth underneath.

On schema, honesty requires presenting the conflict. SE Ranking found about 71 percent of pages cited by ChatGPT include structured data, and about 65 percent for Google AI Mode, which is correlation. Ahrefs tested causation in May 2026 across 1,885 pages and found that adding JSON-LD produced no measurable citation lift for ChatGPT and AI Mode on already-cited pages, plus a statistically significant decline in AI Overviews citations. Bing's Fabrice Canel says schema helps Copilot understand content. Our position: ship accurate FAQPage and Article schema because it is nearly free and may help discovery, and expect nothing more from it. The practical build is covered in FAQ pages that answer engines actually use.

What AEO cannot do

A discipline earns trust by admitting its limits, so here are AEO's three. First, it cannot rewrite training data. When an assistant answers from what its model absorbed before the knowledge cutoff rather than from live retrieval, no page you publish today changes that answer until the model is retrained, on a schedule you neither see nor influence. Retrieval-grounded answers are the addressable surface, and fortunately they are a large and growing share of buying questions.

Second, it cannot produce deterministic results. AI answers are probabilistic: SparkToro measured under a 1 percent chance that two identical ChatGPT runs return the same brand list. AEO shifts the distribution of answers in your favor; it cannot guarantee any single answer. Anyone selling guaranteed placement in AI responses is selling something the plumbing does not support.

Third, it cannot substitute for a product worth recommending. Answer engines lean heavily on third-party corroboration: reviews, community threads, comparison pages written by people you do not employ. 5W Research found Wikipedia and Reddit together account for over a quarter of ChatGPT citations in the U.S. If real users describe your product badly in the places engines read, AEO amplifies that signal rather than overriding it.

Measuring AEO honestly

Because answers are probabilistic, AEO measurement is a statistics problem disguised as a marketing dashboard. The honest protocol has four parts. Fix a question set of 20 or more unbranded buying questions and do not change it between measurements. Run it on a schedule, because a single run is a coin flip. Store the raw answer text, so every score can be audited by reading what the engine said. And exclude branded questions from the headline number: an answer to "is Acme any good" mentions Acme by construction, and counting it flatters the score without measuring anything.

This protocol is exactly how Reachroller is built, and the design choices are documented on our methodology page: official engine APIs only, a mention counted only when the brand name literally appears in stored answer text, every number linked to the raw answer behind it, and branded questions excluded from the score. If a tool you are evaluating cannot show you the raw answers behind its numbers, it is reporting vibes with decimal points.

Does the traffic pay? The conversion evidence

The visitors who do click through from AI answers behave differently, and every major study agrees on the direction while disagreeing on the size. WebFX analyzed 2.3 billion sessions from January 2024 through December 2025 and found AI traffic grew 796 percent, with AI-referred visitors converting about 1.2 times organic. Adobe measured AI traffic converting 42 percent better than non-AI in March 2026. Semrush put the figure around 4.4 times standard organic, and Ahrefs found up to 23 times, a result widely treated as an outlier and best cited with that caveat attached.

Two honest qualifiers belong next to those multiples. AI referrals remain a small share of total traffic, roughly 0.18 percent of sessions in some panels, and a meaningful slice of AI-sourced visits hides inside direct traffic where analytics cannot attribute it. The pattern that emerges is small volume, high intent: a visitor arriving from an AI answer has already been briefed and often pre-sold. We read all of the conversion studies side by side in our review of the AI traffic conversion data, including which numbers survive scrutiny.

A first AEO sprint, step by step

Establish the baseline. List the 20 to 25 questions a buyer would ask an assistant before choosing in your category, phrased the way real people type, with your brand name absent. Ask them in ChatGPT and Perplexity, save every answer, and mark which ones name you, which name competitors, and which sources each engine cited. Expect the baseline to sting: recall that half of B2B tech brands measure zero citations.

Fix the three questions that cost the most. For each, publish a page that answers it completely in the opening paragraph, then supports the answer with the statistics, quotations and cited sources the Princeton research validated. Use a question-shaped title, add accurate schema, and submit the URL to Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools. Then wait one to two weeks, because engines read indexes and indexes take time.

Recheck, then decide about tooling. Re-run the question set against the stored baseline and see what moved. If the loop works for you manually, tooling makes it sustainable. Reachroller runs the whole cycle on schedule: tracked questions across engines via official APIs, auditable scoring, a publish-ready fix page for every lost question with slug, title tag, meta description, schema and indexing steps, and an automatic recheck. Starter is $29 per month, and the trial gives you three days, 50 credits and every feature with no card, enough to run your full first report.

Frequently asked questions

What does AEO stand for?+

AEO stands for answer engine optimization: structuring content so that answer engines, including AI assistants like ChatGPT and Perplexity and features like Google AI Overviews, choose your page or your brand when composing an answer to a user's question.

What is the difference between AEO and SEO?+

SEO optimizes for position in a ranked list of links; AEO optimizes for inclusion in the single answer an engine composes. SEO fundamentals like indexing and crawlability remain preconditions for AEO, but the winning content changes: direct answers, citable statistics and third-party corroboration matter more, while tactics like keyword stuffing measurably backfire.

Is AEO the same as GEO?+

Nearly. AEO grew out of featured-snippet optimization and emphasizes answer-shaped content; GEO was coined by a Princeton-led research paper and emphasizes visibility inside generative AI responses. In 2026 both terms describe substantially the same work, and the differences are emphasis rather than substance.

Which tactics actually have evidence behind them?+

The strongest evidence supports adding statistics, quotations and cited sources, which lifted visibility in generative answers by up to roughly 40 percent in the Princeton GEO study. Schema markup is contested: correlation studies favor it while Ahrefs' controlled test found no lift on already-cited pages. Keyword stuffing performed below baseline.

How do I know if AEO is working?+

Track a fixed set of unbranded buying questions across engines on a schedule, store the raw answers, and count literal brand mentions over time. SparkToro measured under a 1 percent chance that two identical ChatGPT runs return the same brand list, so trends over repeated runs are the only honest signal. Reachroller automates this and links every score to the stored answer behind it.

Does AEO traffic actually convert?+

The studies disagree on magnitude but agree on direction. WebFX measured AI-referred visitors converting about 1.2 times organic, Adobe found 42 percent better, Semrush reported around 4.4 times, and Ahrefs found up to 23 times, which is widely treated as an outlier. Volumes are still small, roughly 0.18 percent of sessions in some panels, but intent runs high.
