28% of ChatGPT's most-cited pages don't rank in Google

Ahrefs analyzed the 1,000 pages ChatGPT cites most often, using the ChatGPT index inside its Brand Radar product, and found that 28.3 percent of them have zero organic visibility in Google. Nearly one in three of the pages ChatGPT leans on hardest does not rank for anything. The finding, published by Ahrefs researcher Louise Linehan as part of a six-month program that analyzed over one billion data points across 14 studies, breaks the most comfortable assumption in marketing: that if you rank, AI engines will find you, and if you track rankings, you are tracking AI visibility. The study design matters, because the headline number gets repeated without it. Ahrefs maintains an index of ChatGPT citations inside Brand Radar, its AI visibility product. Researcher Louise Linehan pulled the 1,000 pages that ChatGPT cites most often across that index, then checked each one against Ahrefs' own rank data, which covers billions of keywords. For 28.3 percent of them, the answer was no. Not a low ranking, not page two: zero organic visibility, meaning the page ranks for no tracked keyword at all. Read the number from the other direction and it stays honest: roughly 72 percent of ChatGPT's most-cited pages do have Google visibility. Ranking remains the widest road into AI answers. Why a page can be cited without ranking

ChatGPT does not read Google's results page. What this breaks in your reporting

Most marketing dashboards treat organic rank as the proxy for search presence, and until recently that was defensible.
