Wikipedia checker

Wikipedia is among the most-cited sources in AI answers, and Wikidata feeds the entity graphs machines use to know who is who. Enter a brand name and this checker searches both, then reports what exists: a dedicated article, mentions inside other articles, a Wikidata entity, or nothing yet. Knowing where you stand is the starting point for a strategy that respects the rules.

Why Wikipedia weighs so heavily in AI answers

The numbers are stark. 5W Research analyzed ChatGPT citation share and found Wikipedia accounts for roughly 13 percent of citations, the largest share of any single site, and Wikipedia together with Reddit exceeds a quarter of all citations. Engines lean on Wikipedia twice over: as a retrieval source quoted directly in answers, and as training-data backbone shaping what models believe about entities, which companies exist, what they do, and how credible they are.

Wikidata plays the quieter role. Its structured entities help machines disambiguate names, so a brand sharing its name with a common word or a bigger company benefits from a clean entity record that says which one you are, with your site, founding date and industry attached. Absence from both projects leaves models to assemble your identity from scattered mentions, which is where confusion and hallucinated details creep in.

How to read your results, and what to do about them

The results sort into four levels. A dedicated article in good standing is the strongest position; check it for accuracy and out-of-date claims. Mentions inside other articles, a competitors list or an industry page, still feed retrieval and training even without a dedicated article. A Wikidata entity alone provides the disambiguation layer. Nothing found means the most-cited source in AI answers currently has no record of you, worth knowing plainly.

Now the part most guides get wrong: do not write your own article. Wikipedia's conflict of interest rules cover founders, employees and paid agencies, and self-authored pages about companies lacking coverage get deleted, sometimes after a public discussion that itself embarrasses the brand. The legitimate path is earning notability: substantial coverage in reliable, independent publications, the press and analyst attention your PR work should be generating anyway. Once independent sources exist, uninvolved editors can build an article that survives. For factual errors on an existing page, propose corrections on the article's talk page with sources, and disclose your affiliation.

Wikipedia coverage and AI mentions reinforce each other, and only one of them is measurable weekly. Reachroller tracks whether ChatGPT names your brand on the questions buyers ask, from $29 per month with a free 3-day trial, so you can watch the needle you are trying to move.

Frequently asked questions

Should I just create a Wikipedia page for my company?+

No. Wikipedia's conflict of interest guidelines apply to founders, employees and anyone paid by the company, and articles about businesses without independent coverage get deleted through a public process. The durable route is earning substantial coverage in reliable independent publications first; once that exists, editors with no stake in your company can write an article that holds up.

How much does Wikipedia actually influence AI answers?+

More than any other single site, on the best available data. 5W Research measured Wikipedia at about 13 percent of ChatGPT citations, ahead of every other domain, and Wikipedia plus Reddit together exceed 25 percent. It also shapes answers indirectly through training data, where its descriptions of companies become the baseline models start from when your brand comes up.

We have a Wikidata entity but no Wikipedia article. Is that worth anything?+

Yes, genuinely. Wikidata's structured records feed the knowledge graphs machines use to tell entities apart, so a clean entity with your official site, industry and founding date reduces the identity confusion that produces wrong or blended answers about smaller brands. Wikidata's notability bar is lower than Wikipedia's, though entries still require serious, publicly available references.

A rival has a Wikipedia article and we cannot get one. Are we stuck?+

You are behind on one channel among several. Articles follow coverage, so the work is press and analyst attention rather than wiki editing. Meanwhile the citation share beyond Wikipedia, roughly 87 percent of it by 5W Research's ChatGPT numbers, is contested through your own pages, reviews and comparison content, where a smaller brand can outwrite a bigger one on specific buyer questions.
